This is a small, thumb-box size, painting of a sunset observed by a pond on the Baxter Preserve. The preserve is part of North Salem Open Land Foundation near Brewster, NYin the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. The days had been cold and overcast but the weather was just starting to clear up and get slightly warmer. The warmth and clearer skies brought a cheerfulness to the sky at sunset, or so it seemed to me. Hopefully some of this feeling is conveyed in the painting, although sunset also usually brings a slight feeling of melancholy as we say farewell to the day.
