"Oh Beautiful, for spacious skies!", 16x20, oil on wrapped canvas-$450I've been reading a lot about limited palettes recently, so I feel a little guilty about this painting. As a colorist, it's hard for me to limit myself to mixing from the three primaries, although I have tried it and I admit it unifies the painting overall. This one started out that way, but I didn't last long within the limitations. Tonight I happened to chance upon the gorgeously colorful website of Don Sahli, an incredible painter who studied directly under Russian colorist Sergei Bongart. I have read some of Bongart's writings, and I know that if I had to paint without certain "stainers" as he called them, I'd lose interest in painting altogether! So as a colorist, I think I'll never be able to throw away my quinacridones or my Indian yellow, which I think is made from cow urine, by the way! Check out Sahli's website and then tell me he accomplished tohose gorgeous paintings using a limited palette!
