"Harry's-St. Augustine"-8x10, oil on canvas panel-$89Whenever I am in St Augustine, it is inevitable that I'll have a memorable meal at Harry's. The reason for this could take up a heck of a lot of blog space here. Rather than bore you, suffice it to say that Harry's has a fabulous Old World/ New World ambiance, with an unmistakable jazzy New Orleans flavor that's too good to pass up in northeastern Florida. Harry's is located at the foot of the Bridge of Lions, at 46 Avenida Menendez, in the shadow of the old haunted fort and directly across from the misty harbor.
If you are an enthusiast of outdoor dining, the courtyard /garden alfresco area is filled with lush, climbing in-your-face Florida fauna, subtle lighting, and even a little thorny bougainvillea thrown into the mix, and there is always a talented musician on the premises to sing you your favorite song as you sip a glass of wine and nibble on a Po Boy sandwich, or savor a bowl of jambalaya or gumbo. I have been to their Gainesville, as well as their St. Augustine locations, and although the cost of the entrees is a trifle higher in St. Augustine, it's well worth it to me. The hubster and I visit St. Augustine rather regularly, since I'm addicted to the old world architecture, quirky restaurants, and fabulous art galleries one can find there. One night the hubby and I sat out on the second floor balcony of Harry's and had an intimate romantic dinner overlooking the sailboats gliding almost ghostlike under the last rays of a rosy harbor sunset light. On other occasions we have sat in the sultry garden, sweating profusely in symmetry with a musician wailing out Jimmy Buffet or Bob Marley ballads, and have been equally entertained, and filled to the brim with hearty food, and an attentive staff.
This little study was fun for me to do, since I'm such a fan, and I hope to do a larger, more complex painting of Harry's Bar and Grille in St. Augustine, sometime soon. In the meantime, if you've ever been there, you'll probably want a souvenir. And this little gem of a painting is a whole lot better than a lousy t-Shirt!
