Nothing says "unconditional love" like a child or a dog. These two earthly entities have to be very close to the love of angels.

This is something NEW for me and I really enjoy it....palette knife painting!!!
In the past, I have dabbled with a spot here and there with the painting knife...but this is the real McCoy! In a very few areas I used my finger or a brush to pull things together. I'm very happy with this style and all the color "happenings" it creates.

My adult class had been working on an outside scene w a table set for a ladies picnic. I had a new student who wanted to do the same but didn't know how to approach it so finding a canvas in the studio that needed to be painted over I demonstrated the process to her. Using a canvas that already has paint on it can produce some interesting results. This painting is a little darker than the 1st one as the underpainting affects the top layer of paint. I still liked the results and my new student produced a successful first painting. I have this and the first painting on ebay this week on auction w no reserve. It is 16x20 oil on stretched canvas. Several weeks ago we had friends over for dinner. My friend, Louise went outside w my husband to tour the garden. It was chilly and I lent her a wrap. Her husband ( with the eye of an artist ) looked out the window and suggested that I take a picture of them as the red wrap on Louise looked so pretty against the background of green in the garden. I agreed and took several photos. this one ended up in a painting that I demonstrated to my class. I changed her location and put her in a hilltop prairie. It was the end of the day when the light was low and glowing across the landscape on the Colorado - New Mexico border. I have painted from the photo reference of that trip many times as I caught such a magical moment that continues to inspire me.

North Lighthouse, Block Island original watercolor painting is 18 X 24 inches. This is a different sky than a previous painting I did of this same spot. The photo is brighter on the bottom left than it should be because of the artificial lighting. I've been doing skies all week after watching Johannes Vloothuis webinar. Lots of good information. :)

Copying Someone's Art: Don't Do It! by Diana Moses Botkin

(This is an abbreviated version of a longer article. You can read the whole piece at my blog.)

All the artists I know work very hard. We labor day after day and often night after night to create original work. This is our livelihood, our legacy, and much more. Our efforts are also our property. Intellectual property rights (copyright) belong to the author (creator) of the work unless sold or expired.

I tell my students (and anyone else who will listen) to do their own work. Don't copy. Use your own photo references unless you have permission to use someone else's. Don't work from someone else's painting, whether from direct observation or from memory.

Nowadays, there is so much beautiful art to see online. It is tempting for folks to copy someone else's work. Don't do it.

Copying another artist's painting or sculpture, even if it is changed somewhat, does not constitute an original work. The copy is actually a derivative work. Copyright law gives only the original author/copyright owner the right to make copies and derivative works, or grant permission for others to do so.

So unless you have permission to copy, don't do it. That goes for images (also writing) you find online, articles you read in magazines, books, advertisements, etc.

Students who don't know any better and even artists who should know better mistakenly believe that if they change it a little, it's somehow an original work. It isn't. Chances are, if your piece looks a lot like someone else's art, it's a derivative work, and it's copyright infringement.

Just last week I explained about derivative work to a student and she responded, "Wow it's like stealing."

Yes, it is like stealing because it IS stealing.

Copyright notice (such as I usually post on my paintings you see here and at my blog) reminds viewers that the work is not up for grabs. I own the rights. However, copyright notice is not required by law. If an image does not have the copyright notice posted, it is likely still a copyrighted image. So don't copy it.

Artists work very hard to create original and outstanding work. We should be asked for permission if someone wants to use it, and yes, paid for it. And yes, legally, as copyright owner I have the exclusive right to reproduce or grant others a right to do so.

I did this one at the open studio at Art Mundo last night, it was lots of fun painting with everyone. I worked from a photo I took from one of the boardwalks at Pepper Park on Tuesday. I loved all the colors, the seagrapes look so pretty now. The paint is nice and thick on this one, I enjoyed piling it on. The painting is 5 x 7 inches, oil on masonite. $100.

I decided to have some fun with hearts today. I started with a textured canvas and just followed my "heart". Intuitive painting is very freeing. I did several and really got into it! Many people feel that the heart is like an extension of our brains holding memories and feelings. Some people who have had heart transplants suddenly have urges for different foods and are drawn to new things and find that the donor loved those things. So hearts really symbolize so much more than just the pump that gets the blood moving in our bodies. They are at the center of our being and sharing our hearts with others is very special!

Today's when I was walking with Bailee, I was thoroughly enjoying the time out in the fresh air, said hello to some ladies passing by, and the next thing I knew, I was landing on the concrete on all fours. Ouch. I haven't been this banged up since falling off my bike as a child. My inner ear gets a little funny this time of year so I will blame it on that. Well...that was my day! One good thing is that Bailee stayed with me. Hope your day was a good one. Tomorrow I go paint with my friend, Barbara Lively again and we are going to paint seahorses! Thank you for stopping by!

BEYOND THE BRIDGE USING MY FINGER AS A BRUSH ON THE I-PAD

THIS was just for fun. Did not have my usual tools with me when wanting to do this landscape drawing. So out came the I-Pad and with my finger and an I-Pad app a quick drawing was done. The new tools that are availabe are just amazing. It was fun and quick way to draw. Completed in about 30 minutes and that was with learning the tools on the app.

Always trying to learn something new and this also gave me new insight on colors and values.
