"Death's Door" (northern tip of the county peninsula)
12"x 18" oil
The waters here where the large bay of Green Bay and those
of Lake Michigan meet, are known for their wicked sudden
harsh swells and wind. Not far from here the car ferry brings
vehicles and their passengers to distant Washington Island.
A much larger craft...but smaller boats caught in this sudden
weather front area, winds and so forth have been capsized
with all those aboard lost...and thus known as "Death's Door!"
To paint this view, I took my aluminum tripod stand for my
Guerrilla paint box and set it firmly in the rocky bottoms.
Deeper and the waters would have been difficult to linger in
long as temps average in the low to mid 50's...but in these
much shallower waters the worst was pleasantly cooling me
down during a very hot day!
The challenge was the clarity of the water, the beautiful
color of the submerged rocks and where the reflection of
the sky entered in. To make it interestingly clear...and pull
together.
