Plum Pyramid 5 x 5 Oil on wood panel

Plums are thought 0f (at least by me) as purple, but when I went of purchase some for painting, the plums were not really as purple as I expected. The so-called "black" plums were not black at all but a deep deep maroon. I used quite a bit of Alizarin Crimson to get an acceptable "black plum".Then when it came to the "red" plum I got into some tones I call "orangey". I have used quotations marks to indicate the questionable blacks and reds. I wonder why a Blue Tic hound isn't blue, or why a black plum is nowhere near black.
