Dawn at Eastport

Some years back when I originally painted this I was faithful in painting details but I've since begun to understand what my teacher Frank Mason would say that one paints a "light effect". In other words, one paints with a concept in mind of where the light is coming from and that a progression of color occurs going through the spectrum of hues from the light source as it expands outwards. Originally the colors of the painting were a little too bright, a little too intense (in response to the passion of the incredible dawn colors). And so, with these things in mind, I began glazing and scumbling color to retouch and enhance the painting, I darkened the foreground and unified the front area as well which gave greater expanse to the distance behind. This was done earlier this evening (Jan. 7, '09).

Painted in Eastport, Maine (way Down East in Maine) originally in July, 2003. It was painted in the earliest hour of dawn. In the foreground is a boat dock and in the distance is Campobello Island and a lighthouse out on a nearer island (Indian Island I believe). Seagulls are congregating on warehouse building to the left.
