It's hard to believe I painted this about ten years ago. This is one of my earliest snow scenes, if not my first. With experience one learns to focus on painting in, rather than being distracted from, the cold weather. Perhaps it's a matter of becoming acclimated to it. However I strongly advise against being in the cold when the wind is blowing and you get near 0 temperatures without gloves and adequate protection as frostbite can occur very quickly.
The scene was painted in the winter of 1997 or 1998 in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY (where I live). The scene is the gazebo in the park by the lake. The history of the park I find of great interest and William Merritt Chase did many great paintings there. Olmsted and Vaux considered it an advancement over the design of their earlier park, Central Park.
