This is a historic Greek Orthodox church in my neighborhood which I like to paint in all seasons but especially in winter which I have been doing for a number of years. The neighborhood has been undergoing dramatic changes in recent years, the nearby McCarren Park has become a popular hot spot for relaxation and recreation among the new locals. The church itself shows evidence of change by the newly restored copper domes. Until recently they were minty-green because of years of oxidation. The new color harmonized with the cool violety tones of winter.
This was painted in the 2007/2008 winter season, about a year ago. It was extremely cold on this day (which made painting a fun challenge). It was recently retouched to unify tones.
