This painting could be titled, "Maine Painting #1" because it was the very first painting that I did in the state of Maine, in the summer of 2002. When I arrived at my destination, "down east", in the easternmost city in the United States, Eastport, Maine. it was late in the day, but I was anxious to try to get something accomplished in the remaining light that was available, and this painting was the result. The sun has set and the light from a lamp post provides illumination to the quickly descending darkness of night. In the distance we see Campobello Island at the horizon.
Because of the limited time that I had, I wasn't able to accomplish what I wanted to. However, I recently pulled it out and retouched it according to memory and knowledge of sunsets that I've acquired since that time. I also tried to capture the mysterious quality that I seemed to find there, of abandoned pier posts and lingering remnants of another time.
