This was a fun painting doing all the different patterns going on in nice brilliant colors. I thought this was a great design of Bakst's, especially for a ballet costume so I took on the challenge of painting it. The dancer is my impression from his painting titled "The Firebird, Ballet costume 1910.
I thought this wine label painting would look great on a longer narrower canvas with a long reflection and simply done with a brilliant gold background glazed with sienna. The sides are painted the same so no need for framing. Enjoy!

Leon Bakst May 10, 1866 - December 28, 1924 was a russian painter and scene and costume designer. He was an art teacher, portrait artist and worked for many magazines and was a stage designer, desigining sets from Greek tragadies and in 1908 made a name for himself as a scene-painter for Diaghilev with the Ballets Russes. He produced scenery for Cleopatra in 1901, Carnival in 1910 and many more. Famous artist Marc Chagall was one of his students.
During this time he lived in western Europe because as a jew he did not have the right to live permanently outside the Pale of Settlement which is a term given to a region of Imperial Russia.
In 1914, Bakst was elected a ,member of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
He died in Paris 1924 from lung cancer.
