Washington Square Arch in Winter
Oil - 12 x 15 ¼"
Click here to bid on this painting.
This was painted two years ago in winter (2006). Yes, painted on the spot in freezing, snowy, rainy, weather. I was inspired by the snow and rainy which created the extreme contrasts of dark and light. The scene is the Washington Square Arch in Washington Square Park in downtown Manhattan (New York, NY), where 5 Avenue Starts (at the arch).
The rain and cloudy, overcast grey day, created a mood which was enhanced by the solitary figure by the street light, which made me think of George Inness' painting, "The Monk."
